I just installed SUSE (linux enterprise Server 10) on my computer (DELL), every thing seems to work correctly except the internet connexion, the OS doesn't recognize the integrated network card Intel(R)82567LM-3, I tried to install it manually: the network card doesn't figure out in default list given by the system and no one in the list is compatible with it,also tried with the original CD (DELL Device Drivers) but it shows an error, tried also to download a driver http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...adType=Drivers but this doesn't work also, I have errors while following the instructions : http://downloadmirror.intel.com/13663/eng/README.txt
May the device be protected by the manufacturer? so it can't work with other OS other than Windows (Cause I have windows XP on the same computer and the internet connection works correctly when I switch to it )
Any suggestions please help.
More of these problems show up on machines with proprietary gear for Windows.
If the card isn't listed as compatible I doubt that Intel will give you enough info to do a work around. If you have room put in a second NIC for your Linux partition.
I have had good luck with Intel and Linux. In fact, I've not encountered a failure to connect to the network with an Intel NIC.
I am assuming this is a wired connection.
Try booting to a Live CD, preferably of another distro (Ubuntu would be good for this because they have maximum friendliness to proprietary drivers) and seeing if it finds the network. That will tell whether it's related to the card or to the install.
I tried a bootable CD with ubuntu 1.6, I found the same pb (network card not found), so can I conclude that I have to try to add a second network card on a PCI port? it is not a configuration pb, isn't it ?
I may have been a little hasty in suggesting a second NIC. If you are in a big hurry get up and running do that.
However, on reflection I think you need to check out your SUSE install carefully. If you haven't written a bunch of data (i.e. it's a new install) you could save money and take the time to try a re-install and pay careful attention to the install process. Any problems! Red flag them and give us little more information on the errors to help out on the trouble-shoot, as a previous commentator remarked there should not be this kind of issue with an Intel card. You can't use your windows drivers on a Linux install. I would try a re-install before spending much more time on this topic.
