Network Adapter Assignment by name?

Hi everyone,

I have to install a new adapter in my firewall and the last time I did this my eth numbers all got changed / remapped which caused me a lot of work. I have lots of rules and iptables on these names and I don't want to have to fix all this again after installing the new adapter.

Is there a way to have the eth numbers assigned by mac address or some other information so that card always gets that assignment?

I am using Ubuntu Server 8.10 is that matters.

just define your mac address in the interfaces file and they should stay persistent. http://www.youritronics.com/how-to-s...ces-in-debian/
