NetBIOS name resolution

I have a firewall problem and my computer (Slack 10.1) cannot resolve NetBIOS names from the network. I was just wondering exactly what needs to happen for a NetBIOS name to resolve, perhaps that would give me a clue as to what I am doing wrong with my firewall. Any clues?

So you can ping the addresses just not the names? What does/etc/hosts look like?
good luck.

Netbios names are resolved by WINS/master browser queries and/or broadcasts on the local subnet. The hosts file has nothing to do with it.

If your firewall is blocking local broadcasts (which I doubt) that could cause the problem, but more than likely it's the fact that when you type 'ping host' into a linux computer, netbios doesn't even enter into the equation.

What are you trying to do, and how is it failing?

UDP port 137

hi

I am not quite sure what you are trying, but for NetBIOS name resolution to traverse a firewall, the firewall needs to forward UDP port 137 to a WINS/NBNS server.

good luck

here is what I am trying to do:

Code:
shriver@hotbox [~]$ sudo mount -t smbfs -o user,uid=1000,gid=1000,username=guest //amadeus/ftp ./amadeus
I get:

Code:
12563: Connection to amadeus failed
SMB connection failed
now when I take down my firewall:

Code:
shriver@hotbox [~]$ sudo /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall stop
Loading kernel modules ...
net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1
net.ipv4.conf.all.rp_filter = 1
net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts = 1
net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_source_route = 0
net.ipv4.conf.all.secure_redirects = 1
net.ipv4.conf.all.log_martians = 1
Flushing Tables ...
Firewall completely flushed! Now running with no firewall.
shriver@hotbox [~]$ sudo mount -t smbfs -o user,uid=1000,gid=1000,username=guest //amadeus/ftp ./amadeus
Password:
the connection works.

there has to be something with my firewall that is preventing me from connecting, but I cannot figure out what it may be. Any more Ideas?
