need basic smtp server for laptop

I often access the internet using colleagues and friends broadband connections. Unfortunately, my ISP doesn't allow me to send emails unless I'm dialled-in to their connection (I get 'relay not permitted' messages using other people's conections). I can use webmail but this lacks many features I use in Thunderbird.

Is installing an SMTP server on my laptop a sensible solution and if so can you recommend one that is easy to configure and has low CPU/mem usage?

Most distros include sendmail already insalled. It's rather complex to set-up (IMO) but it works, I run that at the office for your exact reason. Look into it and maybe someone here can help you configure it better....

There are also alternatives, but someone else will need to psot on those becasue I don't know much about them.
