Question Need a DNS server URL or somthing to help me get onto the internet(where do I get one

the subject says most of it. I dont know if I have to buy a URL to a DNS server or what, but mine doesnt work. My dad said it cant get to the DNS server but I made sure it could get on the web with the correct IP (i.e. google) and it did.He also said It might be the proxy server. so how do I get a autoconfigure URL for that?

Your ISP should be providing DNS services for you. Contact them to get the proper IP addresses for your DNS servers. Alternatively, most common routers (i.e. Netgear, Linksys, D-Link, etc.) provide DNS services if they are configured already with your ISP's DNS servers. Meaning that if you are beind one of these routers, you can set your DNS server address to the same as your default gateway address and that will do the job too.

Good luck,
-Nick

The instructions provided by your ISP upon initial connection to the internet may have information like:

use DHCP or not

If you use DHCP, the ISP should provide the routing information and DNS. How are you connecting your machine? If you manually switch the cable, and you are not using hotplug, the machine will not know to request this information from the ISP. Normally, the physical connection should be made before booting, and a script does a DHCP request to the ISP and everything just works. You could restart your network:

/etc/init.d/network restart

The command may be different on your system. Look in /etc/init.d

The DNS stuff should be in /etc/resolv.conf after you start your netork stuff or manually edit it in.

The Linux kernel and the Sys V init scripts are very similar on all distros that I have seen. List the directory /etc/init.d
ls /etc/init.d
