multi-protocol im client and jabber gateways differences

What difference exists between a multi-protocol IM client and jabber with gateways?

Is necessary to have the propietary service account for the two ways.

The first the network is private and the second is free?, only?

You must have a proprietry account for whichever way you use. I'm not sure what you mean by private and free. Jabber itself is an open source protocol but to use, say, msn it is a closed protocol even if you use a gateway.

If you really must use msn or yahoo etc then I would sugest not using jabber with gateways because they continually go offline. Better to use something like pidgin which seems to be much more reliable.

solved

Thanks dive.

They have explained me more chatting in conf.jabberes.org room:

A multi-protocol program does not have available all the performances of a pure jabber client: discover services, group chat, ...

For lose not all our contacts of other IM we can use the gateways (transports), but they overload a lot the jabber server and in this aspect does not work so well as a multi-protocol program.
