Im fairly new to linux, but not to networking. I know you can resize the MTU on a nic in windows. Is it possible to do so in linux, or is it even needed? What is the default MTU in linux? Is it something that I can even change?
No one has anything? In case you dont know what I mean , Im talking about the Maximum Transmission Unit, not to offend anyone, but you know some people just dont dig acronyms! LOL!
Default for NIC cards is 1500.
Ifconfig is the way to change it (and a lot of other net stuff too). Read the man page on ifconfig carefully. Then read it again. And repeat again. Its not the most informative (as in details or examples) btut the info is there. Mostly your problem is syntax. The only time I was ever required to modify it was when I was networking with ICS through a Windows 98 gateway on my Debian box through dialup. Since Win98's Path MTU Discovery feature was almost not there, I had to set it to about 480 something so I wouldn't drop packets. Otherwise, I didn't have to touch it, and you won't likely either. Good luck. If you need to modify and the syntax is getting you, ask...
