MTU on ppp


hii all
i wish to improve my ppp0 performance .... my current MTU is 264 ... wot value shud i set it to ?
i access internet through mobile .. hence its wireless ppp .. connected to my serial port ?
shud i lower it or increase it to get better download and by how much ?

my another problem is that my connection die when left idle .. i tried to resolve it by a script with ping in while loop ... but it was not effective ... can i resolve it with MTU ?

Keepalive is what the process is called where you try to keep an idle connection open with some sort of traffic. These can be done in a few different ways, unfortunatly providers can also disable most of these. So for example if you are doing a ping to try to hold your connection open, the ISP can ignore ICMP traffic (ping is ICMP traffic) in it's keepalive timer.

As for MTU, it really depends on your provider. You can play with bigger values, but once your MTU increases above the provider's bottleneck MTU data will be fragmented and performance should drop. Adjusting MTU should not affect idle timeouts in any way, these are two seperate components of your connection.
