3.4-3 is the most recent version I could find, and it is less than two months old... I've had the same problem with recent Slax releases and SUSE though, along with many other not-quite-as-well-known distros. Anyway, the network adapter I have (or at least the drivers that Windows uses for it in Device Manager) is CNet PRO200WL PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter. Don't know if that will shed any light on anything or not.

As suggested above, I'd be inclined to try a new network adapter. I lost an onboard gigabit on one of my motherboards after some lightning, and just threw a cheap PCI card at it to see if everything else worked.
It did, so I still have that configuration.

What driver are you using?

lspci
lsmod

I am ready to give up. Try swapping components until you get it to work:NIC, cable, router...

There was an "operation not permitted" in the middle of things when you ran the init scripts. If you were root, that should not happen and suggests some problem between kernel and NIC. Is there anything more in the logs?
less /var/log/messages, syslog?
