Mandrake sets up NIC in Dell Optiplex GXA with 3c59x driver instead of 3c90x

I am trying to get eth0 up using the onboard 3c90x NIC on the Dell Optiplex GXA. Mandrake 9.1 installs the NIC as a 3c59x. I haven't been able to change the driver.

I have installed Mandrake 9.1 on GX1's with no problem. They also have 3c90x NICs.

I have tried the control centers and drakxconf.

Someone please help!

Thanks.

The 3c59x kernel module should work fine for the 3c90x card.

I'm actually sitting in front of a Dell GX1p system with a similar NIC (Dell doesn't diverge too often in thier models) that is up and running perfectly with the 3c59x driver.

If you are having trouble with getting the interface up, it is probably being caused by something else.

Do you have any ideas of what else I should be looking for?

Thanks,

Sure!

what does 'ifconfig' say, what does 'ifup eth0' do, what does '/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0' contain?

How about the basics: /etc/hosts, /etc/resolv.conf, etc?

OK, this is what I found.

# ifconfig

collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:133732328 (127.5 Mb) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0xdc80

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:62 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:62 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:3912 (3.8 Kb) TX bytes:3912 (3.8 Kb)

# ifup eth0
Determining IP information for eth0... failed; no link present. Check cable?

I have already confirmed the cable is connected and the port is active.

ifcfg-eth0 contains:
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes
NEEDHOSTNAME=yes

Thanks.

Try deleting the NETMASK and NEEDHOSTNAME lines. If you are truely using DHCP, the netmask should be delivered to your machine using DHCP. Also, ensure that iptables isn't blocking and traffic (specificly for DHCP) with 'iptables -t filter -F'.
