Unhappy Mandrake 7.1 Realtek 8139 Woes

Talk about a dead end getting this card to work. NOTHING I've done has done ANYTHING to get this card up. ETH0 fails on boot up. If I pull the card.....the O/S notices that it is gone...if I reinstall it, the O/S notices that it is back. If I run ifconfig....there is only a LO device, no ETH0 is shown. I have gone into Drakconf and into the networking and have configured it using the correct IRQ, 11 , and the correct I/O DC00 that both W2K and the Realtek diag program say that it is set up for. I have also told it to use the realtek rtl8139 driver and gave it a static address. Told it update and nothing really happens. Under HARDDRAKE, the network card shows up as a realtek 8139. If I go to system information and look at the irq's, there is nothing noted under irq 11 nor is anything listed under the I/O address either. Everything runs great on this box except for this X*$>!& network card! I have read and research until my eyes are toast! ANY direction is GREATLY appreciated!!!!

What output do you get when you run
Code:
lsmod
Does it show the rtl8139 or 8139too modules loaded? If not try loading one of them by hand (using modprobe rtl8139) and see if that works. If it does work (i.e. you don't get an error message) then it looks like for some reason your module is not getting loaded at startup - you'll want to find the relevant config file (not sure exactly where it will be in your disto - I'm from the Slackware camp - try somewhere like /etc/rc.???/???/) and put your modprobe line in there, on Slackware it would be either /etc/rc.d/rc.modules or /etc/rc.d/rc.netdevice but it varies per distro - hopefully someone else on the forum will be able to tell you the correct location.

Thanks for the reply. I finished this morning, thank goodness for Starband, downloading Mandrake 8.0. Installed it and it also detected the card but this time used the 8139too driver. Guess what....it works fine now. You were definately in the right area. Thanks again.

Jim
