i don't understand why it would give a telnet error.. what are you doing to test your loopback ?? your not trying to telnet into the same machine are you ?? can you ping 127.0.0.1 ??

I did a ping to 127.0.0.1 and it works.
but when I tried using
telnet localhost
I got that message
before to install the R H 7.1 I used the 6.0 and I didn-t have that kind of problem
any guess about what is giving me that problem?
thanks for your time buddy
I really apreciate your helpful

Hi,

The telnet server on redhat is controlled by xinetd and the config file is /etc/xinetd.d/telnet. It is possible that that has restrictions in it such as 'only_from=' as in the example below:

service telnet

{

flags = REUSE

log_on_failure += USERID

socket_type = stream

user = root

server = /usr/sbin/in.telnetd

wait = no

only_from = 127.0.0.1 172.16.16.0

}

Also, presumably you activated the service after installing the telnet-server rpm ? It's off by default.

/sbin/chkconfig telnet on (as root)

Regards
