Question //localhost address problem

Hi,

Newbie to Linux RH9, so i'm learning all the time, and this being my first post

The LAN i have setup up is: RH9 box (webserver), XP & win2k (workstations), with DSL/Router.

The problem i am having is trying to access the webserver from one of the local PC's with '//localhost' , it wont work. It does however work when i use the IP.

Where should i be focusing? is it a network config or an apache config thing?

(running apache 2.0.40)

Cheers

assuming that you are running the samba daemons, you should be able to http://webserver/ and windows will automatically figure webserver to be your linux box, however, doing http://localhost/ from one of your windows boxes will try to connect to THAT local machine, and i'm guessing that you don't have a webserver on the windows box

also, you could alter c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file and put the IP address that 'webserver' is assigned, and some kind of name...

hope that helps

doh!

now i have jst though about it... ye i see what you mean, the question; why i was trying to get the browser to look for localhost when localhost IS local machine.

All i need to do now is give the RH9 a server name, which is not working great either for originality i called it redhat.

right now for a few more posted questions

Thanks for that
