I am running Linux, Mandrake v9.1 on ShuttleX w/NVIDIA motherboard. Recently solved no NVIDIA ethernet driver.
Got the driver package and successfully installed nvnet driver, now I have an ethernet interface. BUT, I can't get the browser on the machine to contact localhost. Also attempts to contact from another linux machine via http fails. I'v looked at the error log, access log for httpd (which mysteriously ends Sept 3,03). The error log ends Oct 8 03, The user log has a mysterious recurrent entry for userhelper PAM timestamp. In all places it reports /var/run/sudo/[me]/unknown:root. When I look into[me] directory, there is nothing there. In many places in addition to the unknown:root there is a message as such; "is too old, disallowing access to simple_root_auth for UID 501.(501 being my uid). I presume this is Mozilla trying to contact localhost and failing. Apache cant su to root to gain access to var/www/html/ (the document root)to serve the pages.
In httpd error log therre's an error; cannot allocate shared memory.(17)file exits.
If there is anyone who can interpret these messages and tell me if they actually related to apache and it's root access capabilities. Please let me know. I don't want to spend $50.00 and hour to have some tech rooting around my system.

Can you post a bit more information to clarify the problem. Its not clear to me whether you have networking running, but apache isn't working right, or whether networking isn't working right at all.

- Is your network interface up and running?
- Can you ping localhost? Can you ping a remote computer?
- Are there httpd processes running?
- From the other machine, can you ping the web server by IP address?
- Are you running a firewall on the web server?

I have a web server running on the other linux system and can get into the web content on that machine from this one.
There is one other possibility and that is .Xauthority.
But I havn't a clue about the encrypted cooky associated with it.

Q#2 yes, I did while doing tcpdump as with attempts to connect via http.
Q#3 yes several, I even did /etc/rc.d/init.d network restart amd /etc/rc.d/init.d/ httpd restart

I have iptables and I've done -F to flush the rules.
The second part of the answer I'm not sure if I understand that, would there be firewall working with Apache, specificaly?
I'm thinking it is a problem with PAM.
My drastic solution is to uninstall the OS and reinstall it.
But I hope I can get on top of the problem so I understand it the next time I encounter it. I have solved problems coincideentally, and it bugs me because I didn't understand why the problem and why the solution worked.
