Linux/Windows modem sharing.

I am running a box with Mandrake 10 Community installed, the internal modem will not work at present with this distro. This box is connected via Lan cable to a Win 2000 machine with an internal modem.

I can ping both boxes from each other.

From the Linux box I can use a virtual desktop to use the Windows box and start/use the modem. I can connect to the internet this way.

What I would like to do is connect directly to the Windows modem from the Linux box so that I can download Man updates from the net.

I know that windows ICS can have a remote windows box start the internet connection, if your using windows XP then just look at the properties of your internet connection under "My Network Places" and under the advanced tab check the "establish dialup conection whenever a computer on the network requests it...." Then just set your default gateway on your linux box to the windows box, and when you go to access the internet *wala* it connects. The only problem with this is disconnecting..... Havn't figured that one out yet.

Thank you for this.

I have now managed to get the modem to fire up from the Linux box [down the LAN cable].

However when I start Mozilla mail or browser though it 'goes looking' for the mail etc nothing is being downloaded.

I suspect that this is a missing setting somewhere in either of these programmes or in the general Linux system config, though I cannot find anything appropriate.

Anyone got any ideas please.
