Cannot get the Linux (Fedora Core 1) on my second computer to operate through router D-link, model DI 604, 4 port Ethernet Broadband Router(LAN cable connected to Qwest Actiontex, Model GT701-WG modem) to local Internet provider. Therefore, I will explain the Linux Network Fedora Core 1 Configuration setup procedure I must follow and where I have questions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit Interface eth0
Configure eth0 - D-Link System Inc|RTL8139 Ethernet
I go to EDIT and DESELECT, " Configure using DHCP."
I check "Activate on boot."
This requires I enter an IP and NetMask.
QUESTION 1: I do not know where to find the right settings. Are these the IP/Mask of the Router or the ethernet card (NIC), if so how do I find out what numbers are?
Next, I am asked to Set the Host name: (The first setting I have no problem understanding.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now I am asked to provide Miscellaneous Settings:
QUESTION 2 : Which gateway/DNS settings are required;
a. from the D-Link DI-106 4 port LAN router? or
b. from my RTL8139 Ethernet NIC card or
c. From my DSLQwest Actiontec modem?
Listed below is the only source of information I have available:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. From my Windows XP computer which will display the QWest Actiontec information as follows:
Firmware Version:
MAC Address:
WAN
Connection: Connect Disconnect
IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
DNS #1
DNS #2
LAN
IP Address:
Net Mask:
DHCP SERVER: ON (at present time)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. My Windows XP IP Config information:
Adapter Network Bridge:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix .
Address:
Net Mask:
Default Gateway:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. IF Config information from previous setup of Linux Fedora Core 1
etho
inetaddr: Bcast:
Mask:
OTHER DATA (which I believe to irrevalent)
LO data (again I believe not revalent)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have Guide Linux for Dummies but they are vague as to where this data is to come from.
If anyone understands my problem --- PLEASE HELP --- I simply don't know what to do next. Thanks in advance and have a Happy Newyear!

Why are you are NOT selecting DHCP for IP configuration ?
If you have a router dishing out IP addresses, DNS addresses come from there as does the mask and gateway add. (gateway add is typically your routers local add, DNS comes from service provider)
If not using the DHCP you have to do everything by hand and it's harder and unnecessary ..
DNS address could change if you SP decides to move things around (rarely .. but possible) .. with FC I have found that you better specify the hostname even if you want to use DHCP .. seems like a chicken and egg problem with them.. but that's the only thing to set.
Go back and carefully select DHCP to configure the port at install.
If the system is installed, you can run ifconfig (/sbin/ifconfig) .. as root and you will be able to configure the port on the fly.
Read the manpage on ifconfig .. and ifup/ifdown .. this stuff is rather straightforward.
