linux/modem

Hi Folks, an oldie - is there a list of dial up modems that work under linux? I know this is a broad questions but I need a backup modem and I would like to connect it to a PC running linux. And just leave it there.

Sure - there are lots of lists.

Just try to avoid getting a "WinModem", if at all possible.

'Hope that helps .. PSM

thanks Paul. Based on your links I might as well try and get an old internal modem going first. I have identified the chipset and downloaded the driver. Into the unknown...

After some 15 years a lot of winmodems are finally supported but to have the best luck get a real hardware modem and knowing the init string would help.

The Linuxant drivers work well with 'Winmodems', and I've gladly shelled out the $20 to encourage their development. Small price to pay to get full 56k speed with faxing working, with hardly any effort. But I've used laptops almost exclusively, though, for quite some time.

That said, pretty much any 'real' (NOT Winmodem) external modem should work great, even with a USB to serial converter.
