Linux computer asking for user name and password

Im kinda new to Linux and really new to networking. I got my SuSE 10 laptop up and viewable to my wondows box.

When I go to my networks places on the Xp box I can see my SuSE 10 laptop but when I try to connect to those shares it always asks for a username and password. I know I never set one though? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Wavz

never setting one is what you did wrong. you need to install and/or configure samba to access the shares.

Ok got it I'm a , it was a configuration thing. Sorry about that but I guess it takes another persons view to get you going in the right direction. Thanks SlackHack.

Ok another question if I might?

Now that I have the XP box working with the networked files, I can seem to see the network working the other way. I googled ports for samba to work with windows, and have configured them on my XP box, but it seems that if there is something not letting me see the files on windows. Any ideas on that one . actually Im kinda afraid to ask about windows on a Linux forum

Thanks alot,
Wavz

You solved the little user issue, yes?

Now you need to make sure that the directories are accessable by the user. "chmod +x [dirname]" (eg "chmod +x /home/sharing") should help with that, if that is the case.

I guess I worded my responce a litte wrong. I dont have a problem connecting to my Linux laptop from my windows desktop. But the problem is when I try to connect to my windows shares from my Linux laptop. I keep getting "Could not connect to host for smb://xxxxxx". xxxxx= the name of the windows server. Now it has no problem seeing server xxxxxx but I just cant go any farther then that. So any suggestions would be a big help to this Linux/Networking .

Thanks,
Wavz
