Linux as a router, for XP clients

Hi

I have a debian (3.0r1) linux box acting as a router/firewall for my small LAN of 4 windows XP PCs.

However, net access seems a little slow.... ie, pages are hanging half way and then resuming.. usually on pics.

my pings (from the clients, and linux box) are fine.. to origin servers. For example, 9ms pings to yahoo.co.uk. 85ms to yahoo.com, etc.

Any advice on configuring the XP machines (im sure there's no prob with my linux box...) or the linux box, to speed up the net access, would be greatly appreciated

If you have a config that works nicely (im on ntl cable modem, 600k) then please do share

Cheers

Duncan

Hi, I don't have a good config but I am on a similar setup. I have a SuSE 8 comp with 3 xp pro comps and a win2k server connected through it to NTL. I haven't experienced any probs like yours (just a whole lot of others)

I've set my winxp/2k boxes up to use the NTL DNS server and setup the HOSTS file with all the comps on my network.
I would check your Event Viewer to see if you are getting any errors and try and find what they relate to. other than that I don't know.

Hey thanks for the reply

I just found a 'tweak' that i think has just fixed all my woes!!

I deleted the "index.dat" file in c:\documents and settings\.... etc
since it often becomes corrupted, and i was advised to remove it if IE hangs etc, which it was.

now, browsing seems lovely and fast!!! i would definitely recommend trying it, it does no harm.

you have to kill explorer.exe (via task manager), run the cmd prompt... del the file, then restart explorer
