Linux as a router

I've asked this before but perhaps ill just ask a cut down version of it..

I have:

CISCO ROUTER : 192.168.0.1
LINUX : 192.168.0.2 AND 192.168.1.1
WINDOWS: 192.168.1.2

Windows cant ping the router.. Linux can ping both windows and the router and surf the net.

So can this setup work without messing with iptables? im really really stuck.. should this just work if i have the cards configured properly and the route table done properly?

Thanks for any help..

How is it setup? Physically I mean?
Like this?:
ROUTER <---> linux <---> windows

Or This?:
ROUTER
|----------> linux
|----------> windows

It doesnt really make sense to have linux and router on a different IP mask than the Win* box...

Most likely the solution to your problem is to enable IP forwarding on the Linux box, but it depends on how you have it setup and everything plugged in (like dekket said). Also, make sure you understand the implications of enabling IP forwarding and make sure you have iptables configured so as to protect your Windows box and allow it to make outbound connections (if that's what you want).

There are several FAQs and guides listed in the LQ Security forum on the stickied thread call "security references", it's posted by unSpawn.

Thanks guys

Its ROUTER <--> LINUX (2 netcards) <--> Windows

I was hoping to get this running, then get into iptables afterwards (baby steps u know).

If it cant be done without ip forwarding and iptables then i'll just have to do some reading..

try it (iptables and such)
it is not that hard to use and iptables is really AMAZING, it is one of the best apps I had to work with
