lan issues

hey,
we set up a LAN in our hostel the other day.
now,i have winxp and rh 9 installed on my box.in fact
i installed rh9 yesterday, tho i ve been using it at home for some time.
well it went smoothly and the winxp lan functionality is decent.
i need to know how to acces the other nodes thru linux.
i pinged the other nodes in the network successfully.
however i have no clue as to how i access the shared stuff on my friends boxes(all have winxp installed)
i understand that samba is required(or is it?).an rpm query tell me
samba is installed.but samba a serverritght?i ahve no idea what to do next.pls lead the way.
thanks in advance,
dj
