Auto-negotiation is basically that you let the card choose wether to run at 10mbps or 100mbps and half-duplex or full-duplex.

There's is a tool called "mii-tool" that can help you set those modes manually.

If a card isn't auto-negotiating properly, how do you force something like "full duplex" to persist through a reboot?

Use insmod or mii-tool in rc.local or is there something less bandaid-ish?

this type of setting belongs in /etc/rc.d/rc.network or rc.inet1 (depending on what distro you use)

or, you could even put it in rc.modules just after the network card driver is loaded.

but rc.local should still work.. its just messy.
