kernel recompilation

hello

i am a linux instructor.i am using RH9 . i cannot recompile my exsisting kernel and i cannot install new kernel

error in existing kernel

some steps are needed to change our current kernel. that steps are obtained from internet.

first e must have following packages installed.

1) gccc-*
2) cpp-3.2*
3) glib*
4) kernel-*
5) binutils-*
6) ncurses
7) bison-*
8) tcl-8
9) tk-8

then i change to /usr/src/linux2.4 directory
then run following commands
1 make mrproper
2 make xconfig
3 make dep
4 make clean
5 make bzImage
6 make modules
7 make module-install

in 5 th step i got the error message like this

kernel is too big .

so i cannot contine further steps

error in new kernel( i tried with kernel 2.6.0-test1,kernel2.6.0.test2)
in 6 th step i got error message.
so i cannot contine further steps

what is the reason for getting the error message? my existing kernel version is 2.4.20-8

what is the reason that the kernel is too big? well because there's too much in it of course..... you need to slim it down a a bit, remove unneeded drivers, and modulise ones more suited to be modules.

normally that error is actually that the kernel is too big for a boot disk... which is not fatal at all...
