iSCSI Targets for Tape (character) Devices

We are trying to replace our existing FCS Tape bank (Chapparrel VFS - FCS to SCSI Router) with an iSCSI Solution.

We are having trouble finding iSCSI Target Software that supports tape drives under Linux (or any OS for that matter). Neither Ardis, SourceForge, nor the UNH Target appear to support it. The UNH software says it does support tape, and we did toggle the #define in the code, but we could not seem to get it to see any of the tape devices.

Has anyone ever successfully communicated with a tape device via iSCSI, and if so, how did you do it?

thanks
ben

If you're still here(I guess you're not)

I'd tried on Hard Media and CDrom, it's working flawlessly but under windoz environment.

Still Here....

Hi,

Still here and still looking for an answer on accessing tape drives remotely via iSCSI under Linux.

In the interim we have used a series of secure shell commands to access the drives under Linux. Not optimal, but it works.

Hi Ben,

out of curiosity, are you using iSCSI HBAs, or just the iSCSI initiator software in Linux?

Cheers,

Anna
