type "netconfig" as root
and give IP blah blah no need to define gateway if this is standalone system

then restart the network

#service network restart

i have already done that. my network have have already a ip adress, a netmask and a gateway (i m connected in the school network)

i type the command ifconfig, and i see eth0 with the right ip adress and network mask. but after 20-30 minutes, i type ifconfig but there is no ip adress and netmask in eth0. they dissapears!!!

You need to enter the BIOS setup when the computer reboots and turn off all the power management features (well, at least the ones that put the machine to sleep).
