ip address

hi all, newbie here, need some help.
i am currently using RH9.0 and am having some difficulties finding out what my ip address is. my main question is how do i use the linux equivalent of window's "ipconfig" .

i did the search and it yielded "ifconfig". i try running it ina terminal and it didn;t work. just gave me an error. so i switched to Root and tried again, still no luck. and then i looked for .../bin/sbin but there is no /sbin under /bin. so here i am, askign for some help.

anyone?
thanks
