Unhappy internet speed very slow at times in Linux

hi,
i am very new at this(i just started using linux).
i tried many distributions like UBUNTU6.10, SUSE1o.2, naow i am using MANDRIVA ONE
and i always have the same problem with my internet(the speed is very slow sometimes and sometimes it is normal). my PC is Pentium3 1.3MHz with 512MB RAM(it should be sufficient enough)
my connection is ethernet through speedstreem modem/router(i have two PCs set up(one is using Windows XP))th windows XP one works just fine the speed is OK, but the linux one is slowing down a lot.
When i load a page it takes a about 30 to 60 sec for a simple page(lets say Google.com) and then when i type in something to search is superfast, then i click on a link and again it loads up slow.
So far it has done it in all Linux Distributions i tried.
please help
i ve read a lot of articles but nothing seems to help
Thanx!

IPv6 enabled will cause this sort of thing. I had to kill it on my Mandriva 2k6 system to get normal performance. I will see if I can find the instructions on how to kill it, and post them.

Lets narrow it down a bit. Do you have trouble with a particular browser? If yes did you try another browser? Is download speed affected?
