internet sharing.. with a twist

i have abit of on unusual problem here, i have a lan setup with intenret sharing, i recently got a laptop with no network card, i can connect it to one of the computers via null modem and pppd and it works, i have attempted to setup firestarter on the comp with the null modem attached and used the 'ppp' interface as the 'internal' network and the ethernet as the 'external'
so far i can ping all the ips on my network from the laptop, but i cant ssh or anything... regardless of the rules i seem to be able to set up. i can even ping out to the internet via ip, but i get no DNS either... despite having the proper ips in /etc/resolv.conf... any ideas?

Did you make sure ip forwarding was enabled on the "router"?

Code:
echo 1>/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
