Intermittent Connection Problems

HI,
I have a windows and linux machine communicationg via a land line. The windows machine requests a servlet from the Linux machine. This works most of the time, however I often get a page not found error from this request. When this problem occurs, if I try do a traceroute from the linux to the windows machine I get nothing, but a traceroute from windows to linux is fine. The intermittent nature of this problem has made it very hard to deduce, can anyone shed some light on the problem.
