Intermitent connection with squid/iptables

I have been trying to set up a proxy with squid and iptables. I have all rules setup and they are working fine.

My problem now is that squid and/or iptables seems to be crashing and not allowing web connections. When this happens I get an error saying that the page cannot be found. I am also not able to connect to the box with ssh. I am able to make SMTP/POP3 connections through the box, and ping other boxes.

What could be wrong and what should I do to get this to be a stable box.

the specs of the box are fedora core 4 x86-64 with all updates (from yum update) I got the squid version that was installed from yum 2.5.

The hardware is a celeron D 2.53GHZ 1GB RAM, 40GBSATA HD.

Thanks,

Dragonleech

Is the squid process dying or otherwise borked? See any error messages on the squid box?

//This isn't really a security question and sounds more like a networking issue, so I'm moving this thread to the Linux - Networking forum.

The squid process does not stop running but I am not able to reach the any website.

I was running the fedora core 4 x86_64 and over the weekend I read (can't remember the exact website) that it has some issues. I am now reinstalling the system with the 32 bit version of CentOS 4.2 and will see if that works.

thanks,

Dragonleech

is the error message you get generated by your browser?? or is it squid's error page?? what does the squid logfile show??

and this happens only when the problem above occurs?? does your /var/log/syslog show any packets being dropped when you attempt to connect?? what do you iptables rules look like??

the error message comes from the browser (firefox 1.5 on Windows XP)

I am not able to connect to ssh only when this the problem above occurs.

I have changed to centOS 4.2 (using the same iptables, and squid.conf as from the other setup). I have also fixed an error in my iptables that was dealing with DNS queries. I seem to be doing better now. I will add more if I run into the same problem again.
