can anyone tell me how to monitor the network traffic of my linux machine ? i've discovered that the led of my switch flicks vigously and i want to know whats happening ...
You can use a packet sniffer like ethereal to take a look at all the traffic that your system is seeing. Seeing alot of traffic doesn't necessarily mean something malicious is going on, especially if you have a couple of windows boxes on your network. Now if you only have one system connected to a DSL line, I might be a little more worried.
HTH
Also sniffing a switch will only show you the traffic going to/from your machine. But as Cavey has already said unless you're getting a lot of activity its probably not much to worry about.
