I use ubuntu 5.10 breezy badger. I have trouble connecting to the internet. Can anyone give me some help configuring the interface eth0. I just need to set the ipaddress, subnet mask and the default gateway. The reason I am doing this is because I ran a command that list the kernel's ip table, and I think my default gateway is not set properly.
Are those 3 parameters all that I need. Or am I missing something?
PS:I would like someone to write the commands out here...
you've not said a thing about your topology, so we couldn't possibly tell you the details you need. more than likely you need to just set the interface to DHCP and it'll request them from whatever router you may or may not have connected to your LAN.
All you have to do is edit ifcfg-eth0.
Do a find on that file and post the contents here if the error is not apparent.
On my RedHat servers the ifcfg files live in:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
No idea if they are in the same spot on Ubuntu.
the command:
ifconfig will show most of your current settings.
In Red Hat I can use 'ethtool' maybe you can to.
As root type: ethtool eth0
It will tell you if a link is detected or not. Good tool to use.
acid_kewpie: it is just a cable modem. That is all I have for topology for the moment. It connects to my pc with a rj45 pin. (At least that is what I think it is).
it should be confgiured by default. if you have changed it then there should just be a little tick box in the network config control panel within ubuntu.
Ok. I don't know how but my technician came and fixed it. He just changed the subnet mask. And I could have sworn that value is not the same as the one I use in windows...!
