am i correct in it mapping computers gateways and such, and it associates ip's with names?
that i can do even without dns, soo?
no i'm not really sure, so hence i am asking..
If you have installed DNS server functionality on a linux machine, then the way to check if it is running is to ask it with a command like:
Code:
dig yahoo.com @localhost
If that gives you an answer, then your DNS is running. If I misunderstood your question, and you meant something like, "did I configure the DNS correctly for my machine?" then the command should just be modified to ask your DNS server. If for example your DNS server is W.X.Y.Z, then the command should be:
Well thx, i tried that dig thing and it responded, so i guess my dns is running
thx for the help btw i'm using bind9 is it good, or is there anything better?
i just installed bind9 and it runs without config
is bind good? hehe nice one. bind is by FAR the most common DNS server ever ever (and afaik the first to get any real use), and is what the root name servers all run on. yes, it's good
BUT, i run dnsmaq as by dns requirements on my home network are miniscule, and dnsmasq is vastly simpler to configure.
