From the Ubuntu side, all is well, the setup ran so easy I am now in love with Linux!! I can access my xp machine, folders and windows printer, with no problems.
However, getting into my Ubuntu machine, from my xp machine, over my home network, is not working.
I've searched for answers but, being a novice at all things with Linux and networking, I don't believe the answers I've found, will help me, most direct me to set up networking on Ubuntu(but I'm already there).

Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks for any assistance you can provide,
Tom
samba is your friend. The default "out of the box" smb.conf is quite easy to read and needs little modification (if any) for a "vanilla XP" client to "chat to".
Or, if you don't want to dirty your hands by editing a file - you could use webmin.
Or you could take a look at this - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202605

Okay, so, what are your plans here? Getting into some folders? Zipping files back and forth? Just networking?
For anything (on a Linux machine) to be network-accessible, there has to be a server running. An example: accessing a folder (or folders) on the linux box, requires a running ftp server. At least, that's how I do things.
Maybe a tip, if you want to share space for backups: install a dedicated server and install an FTP server on that box. Also, install a print server on that box. That's what I did, printing is possible from all over the place now...
So, bottom line: get an appropriate server running first.
Thanks, I just want to be able to save files (docs, pictures, video music, etc) on Ubuntu and then be able to access the files on the xp machine. The FTP server suggestion is really a foreign concept to me, I'll need to do some research to figure that out.
I'll look into the suggestion, do you have any other ideas?
