This command should do it.

Code:
nmap -sS -O 127.0.0.1

It sounds as if Elementary OS might be having the issue. I'm guessing you are attempting to connect via the file manager; which one is it? Also. what's the output of smbclient (see post 14) when you point it at the server?

The stack exchange bounty expires in 3 days. Still no solution

ElementaryOS uses pantheon file manager, that is part of pantheon desktop and is developed by the same team I guess.

This is the output from nmap:
Host is up (0.000076s latency).
Not shown: 993 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
53/tcp open domain
139/tcp open netbios-ssn
443/tcp open https
445/tcp open microsoft-ds
631/tcp open ipp
902/tcp open iss-realsecure
9999/tcp open abyss
No exact OS matches for host (If you know what OS is running on it, see http://nmap.org/submit/ ).
TCP/IP fingerprint...

Output from smbclient //192.168.x.x/temp -U me%mypassword
WARNING: The "null passwords" option is deprecated
WARNING: The "password level" option is deprecated
Unknown parameter encountered: "update encrypted"
Ignoring unknown parameter "update encrypted"
WARNING: The "idmap uid" option is deprecated
WARNING: The "idmap gid" option is deprecated
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER

Is this the right way I'm using smbclient.

What are the versions of samba and samba client that you are using? Seems like they may be in conflict? ie, computer1 samba version is X, computer2 samba version is Y and are incompatible.
