i don't know if it is a network or an apache problem

hi all,

well i've just configured that apache on my RH7.3
thanks alot for the guys who helped me . it was installed and i just did:
service httpd start
and it ran .. i opened the konqueror and typed hte ip 192.168.0.3 and the test page appeared ... that was great!

everything from the laptop works fine ( linux is installed on a laptop with a 192.168.0.3 as an ip, netmask 255.255.255.0)

now am using my desktop (192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0) windows Me

the problem is that the desktop cant see or ping the laptop
they all could ping thier selves .. but the desktop can't ping hte laptop .. the laptop acts strangely though .. it pings the desktop .. i mean when i ping 192.168.0.1 from the laptop it pings it very fast less than 1 ms ..

the strange thins also is that if i pinged an ip that is not in the LAN .. it is pingable!! with the same speed of response.

i pinged 192.168.0.99 . and 192.168.0.7 ... they all don't exist in the LAN .. and i get replys from them .. what is wrong?

i would like to surf the files i have in the laptop over the network using apache .. would you please help me??

best regards

If you cant ping other computers within your network, then you definetly got a network problem and not a problem with apache.

And if you only can't ping your linux laptop, then maybe its your firewall. Try stopping iptables and then try to ping it again.

You can also run tcpdump on your laptop and then try to ping it from Windows. You'll see if the packets reach the laptop. If not, there's Windows configuration problem or a hardware one.

hi .. i did tcpdump on the laptop and pinged it from the winMe .. it showed the following:

23.24:04.783530 arp who-has 192.168.0.3 tell 192.168.0.1
23.24:09.****** arp who-has 192.168.0.3 tell 192.168.0.1
23.24:13.****** arp who-has 192.168.0.3 tell 192.168.0.1

the winME shows :
request time out
request time out
request time out

when i ping from the laptop.. as i said .. it pings everything!!

whats wrong?

ok .. if it was a firewall thing .. how could i stop ipchains .. i did ps -x and i didnt' find any thing related ...

could you please tell me how to stop and start ipchains?

You can run ntsysv and deselect it and ipchains will not start the next time that you reboot.

or you can just stop ipchains by:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/ipchains stop

But ipchains is only for the older redhat versions. You probably have iptables. You can stop them by:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/iptables stop

hi guys,
i did /etc/rc.d/init.d/ipchains stop
i did /etc/rc.d/init.d/iptables stop

pinged from WinMe ... doesn't work

i did ntsysv .. and deselected ipchains .. and iptables

same story .. it is not pinging linux

( it works fine when i switch to win2k on the laptop)

i discovered alos that linux can ping any ip starting from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254

all of them are pingable .. and none of them do exist .. except the .1 and hte .3 .......... suggestions?

thanks alot

What's the result of your 'route' command?
