howto web servers?

Hello people,

I would like to built up a WEB server
to allow to my friends to upload and download
files from/to my comp.

I am new to the servers, and know nothing about it.

I am working on debian etch, however the
others would be possibly under windows.

The thing should be easy to install (and to uninstall)
and reasonably secure.

Any recommendations?

Any good HOWTO to read?

Many thanks

Different people have different aptitudes. Meaning what i find easy to read and understand may not apply the same to you. apache is the best i have seen so far. google for apache, you should find everything (including package, howto's ..) all in one place.. apache website.

If you just want a file storage area you'd be better off with an ftp server, not a web server.

Are the other people going to be on the same network as you or different physical locations? Anyone know how well samba works if users are not on the same network?

It might be easier for your friends to interact with a web interface to transfer files around, or maybe use ftp or even better, scp. ftp and scp might be better if there are a lot of files being moved around. Web interfaces can be inefficient for something like that. Just depends on your requirements.

Installing shouldn't be difficult. Your distro probably already has everything for any of your needs. Just need to read the docs to figure out how you want to configure them.

I agree, your better off with an sftp (secure ftp) server. Look into SSH. If your looking for a secure way to transfer files..this would be the route to take. I believe SSH comes with most distros. With SSH the pipeline in which data travels through is secured meaning its all encrypted. Its not like a traditional FTP where what your sending can be picked up by someone sniffing your network and capturing your data. On the server side all you have to do is turn on the SSH Daemon then. If you or your users are on a linux/unix enviroment you can easily ssh into your box. There is also software for windows that will allow you to ssh into your box as well.

Good Luck!!
