How to switch easily from one network to another with my laptop?


Hi!

I would like to know how I could switch easily from one network's configuration to another. I use my laptop at home and at work, and I don't want o type all the network's configuration each time!

does anyone would maybe have a script?

well if you are using dhcp then there are no changes to make, what problems are you actually encountering?

the problem ist that I only use dhcp at home!

If you used NetworkManager or equivalent (the network connection manager applet sitting on Gnome panel, which uses NetworkManager), you could just configure several networks and when you change places, click on the network you use - well I don't use this myself, but I think that's the idea of it. Or if you were working commandline-wise, you could make scripts for connecting to each network, then put them to a directory (or symlink or alias or something like that) where they're searched for when you type in their name. Then you could just run something like "work.up" or "home.up" (name them as you please) to bring the desired network configuration up.

Of course you can make desktop icons and/or whatever launchers you want off those. But I think NetworkManager makes it easier if you happen to use a desktop that has it.

Great thanks! I hadn't seen that there was a possibility to define profiles in the network-manager.
