How to setup NIS client?

I tried to set my PC as a NIC client, and REDHat 9.0 is installed in my pc which is attached to a LAN. I configured the files of hosts, nsswitch.conf, resolv.conf in directory of etc and used ifconfig to assign a static IP address
to my pc, but when I rebooted my pc, I encounted the error message of "can not mount NFS filesystem". Someone can help me?

HI BUDDY,
WHAT I UNDERSTAND FROM YOUR SIDE IS I THINK YOU HAVEN'T TRIED TO START THE SERVICE LIKE portmap, nfs, ypserv from your server. you also have to go to run the script /usr/src/yp/ypinit -m
then you have to give the command "make" after going into the yp dir.(i.e. cd /var/yp)
then it create the one dir & the name is your nisdomain name.
now create one user from server side..
give the password of that user.now you have to cofigure the nsswitch.conf file.but you told you have done it.
so go to the client side & start the 2 services ,portmap & ypbind.
& try to connect thru that user.if it give the error then try "authconfig" & then check it out.
& feel free to contact me.
my email is :
ms_shah2000@yahoo.co.in
bye
best luck

I am sorry that I failed to configure NIS client again!

Dear Maulik Shah:
Thanks for your reply. I set NIS according to the method given by you.
But I ecountered the error message during reboot that my pc can not get the adderss of spp011 which is NIS server.
I think this problem stems from the LAN of my Lab. I can not ping the other PCs in my lab if I use a static IP address even though other PCs in my lab can nslookup me. However, if using the address of 192.168.0.15, I can get the address of spp011 and mount the filesystem on this server into my PC.Also, I can enter LINUX as a NIS client. How to solve this problem? Can you recommend some useful sites to me for LINUX or Solaris 9 NETWORKING? I want to study more in NETWORKING setting on LINUX or Solaris! Thank you!

hi

hi,
Ultra Soul.
u had written in the first mail that u were using the ifconfig command .but let me tell you that it is assigned during your session time .i mean once you reboot the system it got vanishe as it is only variable remain in that particular bash for time being. so it is natural that you got he err msg " can't find the NIS server" as the IP is vanished.
just do the netconfig instead of ifconfig & assign the IP address from it only.
suppose it is also not worked then open the linux in the GUI mode if u r usng the text mode, & then type the command
redhat-config-network.
assign the IP address of your server & create aliases throut it only.It will surely works.
the other thing is as i had provided the info in my first communication you have to go to the /etc/yp.conf on server as well as client side and write the following line :
domain {Domain Name} server {Server Name}
where Domain name & Server name is provided by yours.
this file remain same for all the pc you want to connect for the NIS services.
Also go to the /etc/sysconfig/network & writedown one line :
NISDOMAIN={Nis Domain}
Nis Domain here is agan the same as Domain Name in the yp.conf.
I think now it works.
again let me know immediately so i can help you better way.
bye.
cheers.

I am sorry that I give you a wrong information!

Dear Maulik Shah:
Thanks for your help! I had done the redhat-config-network before your reply. I think I give you a wrong information because I
am not a network administrator in my lab. I found that my pc is connected to router. However, I must access the default gateway whose
IP is 133.9.42.253 and login to the NIS server. Because OS in my pc is Redhat 9 and the OS in NIS server is Sun solaris, if using the Graphics Interface in my pc, the error of "can not open display" occured. So I must use a static IP address which is 133.42.9.198 to
login the NIS server & setenv DISPLAY {static IP}:0 for correct this error.
But my pc is attached to a router , I don't know how to set the network for accessing NIS server through the default gateway of
133.9.42.253. if i set the static IP to my pc, I can not access 192.168.0.1 and can not access the gateway. However, I set an IP address of 192.168.0.15 to my pc, I can not login the NIS server. But I can not use the graphics software in the NIS server. How to solve this problem? Please help me, thank you for your patience.
I have sent a E-mail to your mail-box for obtaining a convenient communication. Maybe the mail is considered as junk mail and filterd by your mail box. My e-mail is ispguojia@yahoo.com. You also can send a reply to my mailbox. Thank you!
