The ntfs drivers in the kernel are for NTFS version 5. XP uses 5.1, and with service packs it leaning more towards 5.2 when you incorporate those mistakes (I mean service packs).

Last time I recommended to someone that they check out captive-ntfs, but they replied back that the developer had stopped maintaining it.

Your best bet is to create a 50 - 100 MB partition for FAT and use that to move files between the two.

look at Xandros's documentation and see if they include their own drivers, possibly used captive-ntfs, or others.

I don't even know what xandros's website is, but I'd start looking there. I am just putting ideas out here
captive-ntfs is on sourceforge.net

yeah,in this case( your problem ) you're trying to read a ntfs partition
in case you want to see FAT32 partition, you just have to mount it.
mount -t vfat /dev/hdxx mount_folder
(create the mount_folder first) and change hdxx to the proper disk
