How to fix severe DNS latency on FC6


I have a problem on FC6 where the following happens. I'm surfing happily along, when suddenly my internet connection seems to die, and no browser can get anywhere. File transfers get interrupted, and it is as if my network interface stops working. Then, about 30 seconds later, everything starts working again.

I notice if I type

route

while the connection is "working" I get:

[root@StefanLinux ~]# route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
169.254.255.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
default 169.254.255.100 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0

but if i type route while the connection is "temporarily frozen" I get

[root@StefanLinux ~]# route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
169.254.255.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0

and then a wait of 30 seconds to a minute before

default 169.254.255.100 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0

appears...

If I do route -n the display is always instantaneous:

[root@StefanLinux ~]# route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
169.254.255.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
0.0.0.0 169.254.255.100 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0

Why is this? How can I prevent these regular half a minute "gaps" in my LAN connection??

I've already done the following:

1. Removed all forms of IPV6 support by removing the module from modprobe.
2. Remove the FORWARD_IPV6=yes line in /etc/sysconfig/network on FC6.

ANY help or pointers appreciated

have you tried swapping your NIC with a known-good one??
