host is down


when i ping and receive host is down return: -1 what's means? in particulary -1

Host would be the target, '-1' I don't know. I checked the man page and experimented a little before answering. Host is down may be common from now on. Most of the commercial sites I pinged failed to respond, even ones I know for certain are up.
