HELP - NIS server/client problem

I have a client to my NIS server...ypwhich on my client shows the correct nisdomainname. ypcat passwd shows all the users on my NIS server...but when i logged as one of the users(that doesnt have a user acct on my client pc) other than root on my client Fedora box..it pops up with a box saying
"Your home directory is listed as: '/home/theusername' but
it does not appear to exist. Do you want to log in with the root
directory as your home directory? It is unlikely anything will work
unless you use a failsafe session."

If i click on No, it pops back to the login box. If i click YES, it pops another
box saying " Please contact your system adminstrator to resolve the
following problem:
Could not open or create the file "/home/theusername/.gconf-test-locking-file"; this indicates
that there may be a problem with your configuration, as many programs will need to create
files in your home directory. The error was "No such file or directory"(errno = 2)." And pops back to login screen.

Login works fine only for root user and users that exist in my client pc.

Another problem is if i change a passwd using yppasswd on the client...it confirmed the change. But if i log out n relogin with the new passwd on the client - doesnt work. It works only with the old passwd. It doesnt seem to be reading/updating passwds properly..."cat yppasswd" on client does show up the passwd table correctly. I notice on my nis server logs /var/log/messages

"Sep 22 23:39:20 Fedora ypserv[31792]: refused connect from 192.168.1.5:32771 to procedure ypproc_match (NISMASTER,shadow.byname;-1)
Sep 22 23:39:20 Fedora ypserv[31792]: refused connect from 192.168.1.5:32771 to procedure ypproc_match (NISMASTER,shadow.byname;-1)
"

Hope someone can point out to me how to fix these two problems. Thanks!

I am using NIS similarly, I exported the /home directory on the NIS server then used autofs on the client so when any user logs in the correct /home/* is automatically mounted. I'm not @my linux box but when I am I'll post my /etc/exports and /etc.auto.** files for you to view see if it helps!?
