I'm a 'relatively'
with Linux but have meddled with them quite a bit (used RedHat, Slackware, Suse and some Solaris) so I know my way around or can find ways to get things done but I'm really stuck with this one.
I can't seem to get Mandrake to connect to the internet through my ADSL modem. I have a ADSL modem which plugs into a NIC on my computer and use pppoe. The NIC is detected fine and works with the modem 'cos I can access the modem's hardware setup page using Mozilla/Konqueror and the modem's IP address
I've tried using MCC to setup the ADSL connection...following all the steps and inserting whatever information required (DNS adds, user ID, etc) but when it tried to connect to the internet it fails. Then I tried the manual way of setting up a connection using 'adsl-setup' to setup RP-PPPoE. This way surprisingly works and using 'adsl-start' happily results in CONNECTED message; but then nothing works. Mozilla/Konqueror/etc cannot 'see' the connection and either says that I'm not connected or 'host name not found'.
A friend suggested the lack of DNS server settings but I've checked and inserted those in the setup sections (plus checked the pppoe.conf and other files) and those were correct. I've also tried the 'route add' option with no effect. Something is probably wrong somewhere but I don't know where to start looking. HELP!
One thing I've noticed is my NIC gets an IP of 10.0.0.10 with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 through dhcp once I've completed the steps in MCC but the modem's internal IP is 10.0.0.1 with a netmask of 255.0.0.0. I've tried to manually change this but it still doesn't work. Using 'adsl-setup' results in no IP for the NIC when I run 'ifconfig eth0'. Is there something wrong here?
If it helps, my Windoze partition manages to connect succesfully to the internet with raspppoe (so no hardware errors/faults there). Only problem is now the NIC gets an assigned IP of 10.0.0.2 with the correct netmask. What gives??
I thought setting up the ADSL connection should be easier than a normal dial-up modem but I've managed to configure that already for my serial modem. To anyone who replies, thanks in advance. Sorree for the long explanation though
