help for project: linux box acting as a router

we have to convert linux server acting as a router.
we want to replace the router by switch and a software which we will create(this s/w will run on the server).
this software helps the switch to route the packet.
we need some help in creating this software?

why would you do that?
there is no such thing a router replaced by a switch. a router is a router which is to route (route-lookup) to different networks, a switch/hub is a shared-media (layer 2 term) and a packet forwarding tool (switching process).

basically what you are trying to do is just creating a new router

Basically its my project and i want my linux box to do the routing mechanism and not the external router.I just want to connect 5 different networks without using router.Is it possible to make my own module and insert in kernel to perform the routing part.My linux box will have two network interfaces.I dont want to use any existing module/command as i have to develop it myself as a part of my project.please let me know if it is possible or not?if it is then from where i should start?
