Help a newbie :)
Hi People
I've been a windows user all my life until i recently bought a copy of a Linux magazine with OpenSUSE 10 on the cover CD
Just went through the installation (including deleting my windows D drive by accident)
I'm having troubles connecting to the internet in linux, i open up konqueror or firefox and tap in a web address, but it always says website cannot be found, although i managed to access google.com once.
I'm using a Laptop with OpenSUSE10.0 and Windows XP, connected to a Speedtouch DLS router, and connecting to the internet via windows has never been a problem
is there some kind of configuration that i need to do within linux to gain internet access for browsing/email etc?
I hope that you can help me with this, please note that i'm a complete linux newbie and have had less than 2 hours experience of it, so please be gentle!
thanks
J

How is the Speedtouch DSL Router connected to the computer? Ethernet, USB, Wireless?
If you can acess your router by typing the networkadress (e.g.: 192.168.1.1) in the browserwindow, you should check if DHCP is enabled in the routerīs setup.

go to networking and check the setup of the networkingcard: use DHCP to get networking adress.

went into yast like u said, set up DHCP
still no luck, i enter the routers ip address into firefox and it says connection refused
whereas if i do that in XP it lets me log into the router an configure
will linux ever let me connect to the net? or is the laptop due to exit a third story window? grrrrr!!

Check the gateway address of your eth0 config, it should be set to the same ip address as your router.
You should be able to use yast to set it up, i think its under the advanced settings.
Plus you might need to add the ip addresses of your isps dns servers into /etc/resolv.conf there are plenty of posts of this forum with the answer.
