general (+samba) troubles

Ah, I'm really sorry about how infinitely newbie a thing this is to ask, but:

Since I've installed RedHat 8.0 not a few days ago I've been generally pleased with its ease of use, except for a few small things. (I'm running my internet through a local proxy server set up on an XP box and every once in a while Mozilla ignores the link I've typed in and goes to google.com. I'm fairly certain this isn't some DNS hiccup or anything, and if anyone has any insight i'd be really appreciative.) My main problem now is with Samba.

I've read a few documents on it and I think I've successfully exrtracted and decompressed &c. everything I need to. But when I run ./configure it gets an error saying

"checking for gcc...no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH"

I rather heavily get the feeling this is some small, silly error I've made, but for the life of me I'm too new at this to make any headway against it. If anyone could help me out it'd be great.

I installed rh 8.0 about 6 weeks ago and one of the first things I wanted was samba. It actually comes as part of rh8.0 so you should not at this stage be needing to extract and decompress and stuff like that. On my system its in /etc/samba . In theory all you need to do is set up smb.conf and away you go. But I've been trying to get it going for all 6 weeks and still haven't managed it yet. See my earlier posting yesterday. Good luck to you, yours will probably work first time.
