ftp speed

I have a Mandrake 9.0 box and a Win98 box on the same network with a cable connection for internet. Both boxes have a 10/100 NIC. The problem is when I ftp to upload a file, the Mandrake only hits about 30 kbps and the Win box hits about 280 kbps. They are both ftping to the same destination useing the same user account. What can I do to see why the Mandrake is so slow?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I cant let the Windows box be that much faster than the Mandrake box.

What FTP clients are you using under Linux? What are you using under Windoze?

Do both machines get a 100Mbps connection to the hub/switch?

Windows box-WS FTP. Linux box-gftp. How do I tell what speed the network connection in Mandrake is getting?
