My computer is behind a NAT/Router.
I do not have a registered Domain.
I am using Verizon DSL.
I just want to get my friend to FTP to my PC and upload/download some files.
Is this possible? My slackware 9.0 comes with proftp and I want to configure it but first I want to know if its at all possible since my PC is using a 192.168.0.xx address. and the far side of the router gets the IP address from Verizon.
If your router has the ability to forward a port to your internal machined (called natting) then yes it is possible. You also wish to sign up for a dynamic dns service if you use a dynamic address so that you don't need to keep telling everyone each time your IP changes.
yes , I have an option for port forwarding.
So, I should be able to select the service FTP and forward to my PC which is 192.168.0.x
and then when I open an ftp client session i should be able to ftp to the IP address that verizon has assigned to me?????
Is it that simple?
Ofcourse I know I will have to read all about configuring proftpd - I just want to know if in theory thats all there is to it.
