Fresh Ubuntu Instrall - Virtual machine, strange connection problems.

Having some weird trouble with an Ubuntu 8.04 computer connecting ( properly ) to the internet.

Here's what I can/cannot do:

can ping router
can ping any website
can dig any website

cannot ping other local machine, however, the other computer can ping it.
cannot apt-get update
cannot browse the internet

I've tried everything I know to do including uninstalling the firewall, switching update servers, statically setting the IP, gateway, etc.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm sitting right here at the machine, so I can run any commands right away.

You say "virtual machine" in the thread title . . . is this Ubuntu machine we are talking about the virtual machine? If so, are you using VirtualBox? VMWare, perhaps? If it is VirtualBox, what is selected under "Attached to:" in the network section of the settings for this machine?

The Ubuntu install is the virtual machine. The machine running the virtualization software, which is VMWare, is windows vista.

All of my devices were auto detected by VMWare including the Network Adapter which uses NAT to share my Vista machine's IP.

I don't remember exactly what the options look like in VMWare, but with the configuration I imagine you are trying to achieve, and given the symptoms that you describe, you should have your network adapter set up as "bridged," and not NAT.

With it bridged, you can set the guest up as if it were sitting on the same subnet as the host, using the same gateway, etc. (A different IP, of course.)
